Northern Branch Recent Events '07

 

The Annual Galaxy of Cars
Feb 07
The Annual Galaxy of Cars gets bigger every year,
this is just a small part of the overall event
Everything from Minis to vintage sprint cars,
Chevrolet Buses to  classic fire engines.
A good time to catch up with old friends and acquaintances
from other clubs to..

We received a mention from the organizers for our display
of fine cars 

Another great  turn out for the Nth branch,
 with a noticeable increase in the quality of our cars.
Our Club Concours is held at this event.
A very noticeable increase in quality made judging harder
plus the 1st appearance of 4 new club cars,
resulted in a few surprises in the judging.

We know of two tales of woe of two cars that tried
to be there but spent a miserable day in their garages instead!
I suppose that’s what motoring is all about

.
A vehicle on its first outing was a very
impressive Bradford Lorry by Terry North.
Terry has been helped tremendously
with heaps of enthusiasm from the "shed nights".
The cake and biscuits help too!

Two and a ½ years preparation
And it made it!!!
The "Project Car" for our Wednesday nights at the shed
had its first public appearance and very successfully too!

 Ken Brownlie is the
proud owner – couldn’t stop grinning!

 

Also Great to see is the up in numbers of the Jupiters
 Haydon’s newly restored car is a "racy" looking thing
Another very clean good looking Club car to add to
the ever growing list

The tidy little Daily driven Van of Keith And Deby scrubbed up OK to.
 Used daily now after a lot of cleaning and rebuilding and still lots more to go.

Sat Fun Run, Sun Show
 Feb '07

Fun Run Saturday 10th Feb
 
A great turnout for the Saturday runs
 We had four Javelins and two Jupiters turn out
leaving our 6 Sunday Show Cars clean for Display
This is now such a huge intercar club event the run is divided
into 6 routes all to different destinations North, South ,
East and West outside Auckland
This is only a part of the line up at the start.
RUN 1: to Wenderholm Regional Park
RUN 2: to Port Albert 
RUN 3: to Mill Bay Beach, Centennial Memorial Park
RUN 4: to Westbrook Winery Waimauku
RUN 5: to Waharau Regional Park
RUN 6: to Cooks Landing Winery TeKauwhata

THEN on the way back!!
Which cleared up very quickly to a beautiful fine day again.
Just as well we left the Show Cars At home.

 

Sunday Show 11th Feb
Another fine summer's day with a nice gentle breeze to keep
everyone comfortable.
From the time the gates opened to closing,
the Jowetts consistently drew a crowd
and with record gate sales this year,
kept the members busy with PR
 

A new addition to the Display this year was the static engines
placed in front of each model

Fish and Chip Run 27th May, 2007
The traditional Autumn Run is to the country
pub at Kaiaua for a fish and chip lunch.
Keith and Deby turned up in their 'jappa' car,
  Ken was on his own so after a short detour
 to drop the 'jappa' off, they where away,
winning the days questions, only after
a play off with 3 tied for 1st place.
This year the route took us through country roads
with an interesting morning tea stop at the
Clevedon Farmers’ Market.
 At the lunch stop (Kaiaua) we were joined by
some of our members from south of the Bombay hills.
 

What run would be complete without some sort of roadside tinkering?

 That’s why we love them.

Post National Rally Noggin and Natter, 29 July
Winter season is well and truly here
and events turn to inside.
 The usual post National Rally get together
was a great evening and well supported.
 With most of the Northern members doing
 some extended touring
 in association with the rally there was a
great selection of photos depicting Jowetts
not only at Nelson but at many other scenic spots
over the South and North Islands.
 We were also treated to some photos of
Jowetts not seen in NZ as Sherill and
Bruce Macfarlane had their photos
from the recent UK Jowett Rally.
 All these were projected onto a big screen
while the odd wine or beer sipped.
The night concluded in a delicious supper.

Garage Raid and Barbeque, Saturday 27th August
 
An excellent turnout of some 36 people
 in 4 Bradfords, 4 Javelins, a Jowett 8 and 9 other makes.
 A pleasant winter day we began at the shed of John Wolf
 to see his Bradfords under construction
and Alan Stanleys Jupiter.

Inside the shed, Think John needs more room
Next round the corner to a magnificently kept and large shed
which housed 4 immaculately restored WWII army trucks,
 two Jeeps and a couple of paratrooper bikes.

Next stop at an ex-member’s workshop where there were
a couple of classic motorcycles and cars being worked on.
Another short drive and we were walking around in a jungle
of Mercedes Benz stacked two high and covering a couple of football fields.
 To finish off a barbeque lunch at The Shed for a barbeque
where the Club’s restoration projects, a CD Bradford and a Javelin
were on display.
An excellent morning with members traveling 100 miles from Whangarei and Cambridge

Shed Tech Evening (Welders) 19th Sept
A good turnout for the mid week evening,
several members coming from as far away as Cambridge, a 4 hr round trip.
Member(Jowett 8 owner) Rod Rugg from NZ Welder Repairs and Services,
 gave a talk on welder and welding basics, including Arc, Mig, Tig,
and plasma cutters, as would apply for the small and home workshops.
Everything what to look for when buying, basic servicing, repair, care and
setup and what gas to use and where.
A very constructive and informative evening.

Economy Run:  Sunday Oct 7th 2007
 
A round trip of 119 miles took participants down the remote route to Huntley
via highway 22 through Glen Murray, a route rarely travelled and so new scenery.
Arriving at Pukemiro bush railway we meet by members from
Cambridge, Morrinsville and Mt Maunganui.
An interesting couple of hours over lunch included a look around at all
the old locomotives and the workshop, followed by a trip on the old steam train.
 
After lunch the run back to Auckland where we had afternoon tea at the
Paptoetoe Cosmopolitan Club while the results were collated.
Economy results in the chart below and the spotting completion was won
by Sherill and Bruce Macfarlane

Northern Region Dinner and Movie
 
Friday 9th Around forty members and friends
enjoyed a coal range cooked dinner
followed by a film in the interesting setting of Ryder’s Museum.
This was a different and enjoyable event and
will be repeated next year when
the museum renovations are complete

Northern Weekend Away November 10 & 11
A great weekend in excellent weather saw cars attend from
Taupo. Otaki, Rotorua, Katikati and Auckland while some
Hamilton and Cambridge members met us for morning tea en route.
 An interesting programme of visits to three different types of museums
 and a great social evening was enjoyed
while the car display attracted a lot of  Attention as usual
 
Morning tea at the a lovely garden location complete
with ponds, bridges and exhibits that
included old vehicles, a sports museum,
replica pun and operating micro brewery
 Local Waikato members joined us for morning tea


 
Line up at the Lakefront meant a busy flow
of interested tourists and locals

The back of a Bradford makes a convenient meeting place
The social evening was great fun,
 and very noisy with cheering and jeering
Some of the women enjoying a chat
in the morning sun at the Pioneer Museum
And
The Tirau  museum was an interesting stop
after lunch on Sunday,
 with memorabilia of interest to everyone.

Part of Waiuku Festival Weekend, November 24
You can see from the signs
the Jowetts had the premier location!
And
With the main street thru the town closed for the
British cars the crowds could stroll by brands like
Armstrong Siddley, Morgan, Jaguar, Daimler,
Jensen, Ford, Morris, Riley, Hillman, Humber,
Vauxhall, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Vanguard and others
At the end of the main street other streets
were closed for a street circuit for a
classic car pursuit race where pairs of cars
 started at opposite ends of the track
and attempted to catch one another.
We were cheering for Neil Moore in # 51

Neil Moore took out the Overall Trophy judged over all three events of the weekend,
 The Pursuit, Classic Tours, and Concours
