What’s Happening at the Shed
Some major happenings at the Shed. The Club Javelin is making progress, all rust has been cut out
and new pieces welded in and the shell has been away, sandblasted and 2 pack epoxy etch primed.
Some minor bogging and it will then
be ready for undercoating. All the removed
parts have been cleaned and painted.
Mechanical work has also started. An engine
donated to the Club has been chosen for this
car as it is already disassembled, is a later PE
engine and looks in very good condition.
Brakes are also being addressed.
Some of this is now possible as the bench has
been cleared of the Bradford engine belonging
to Keith Andrews that has been worked on for
the passed several weeks. New rings and
mains, oil pump and valves overhauled etc
and the engine is on the way back to Keith to
finish off the heads etc.
Peter Bailey’s Javelin has visited the Shed for a few weeks in between moving from Wellsford to
Taupo. The loan engine was removed and the engine reconditioned by Neil fitted along with some
other tidying up including brakes. The car was then delivered at the Rotorua weekend then taken
home to Taupo.
The loan engine that Peter has been using was smoking, despite it recently having an overhaul just
before fitting last year. So we expected to undertake a ring job on it. So off came the rocker covers to
begin the dismantle when it was discovered that one of the rocker oil feed pipes was completely
broken. This would result in a full flow of pressurised oil into the rocker covers and not being able to
drain as quickly may result in the covers filling with oil which could then be drawn down the valve
guides and may have been the cause of the smoke. So a simple rocker replacement was done rather
than pull all the pistons out. We trust this was the cause of the smoke but will have to wait until the
engine is next used.. Peter wishes to thank all those that worked on the car and Malcolm Cameron
for loaning him the engine while Neil did the reconditioning.
